The George's Creek Promotion Council was formed in 1987 as an outgrowth of the steering committee which was appointed by the Lonaconing Mayor and Council for the purpose of planing and coordinating the 150th anniversary of the Town's founding.

The committee worked well together and enjoyed cooperating with all the other organizations, clubs, and churches within the community to manage a successful celebration. An unexpected profit was realized as a result of the anniversary activities, so the members decided to form a permanent organization. They used the profit as "seed money" to support a project felt to be the most important need for young people and the future growth of the George's Creek Valley, a regional library.

The George's Creek Promotion Council lead the fund drives and negotiated for the acquisitions of County and State funding to complete the library. The council continues to be the supporting group or the Friends of the George's Creek Regional Library. [ George's Creek Regional Library ]

Besides the library, the George's Creek Promotion Council helps with many community projects, such as the Iron Furnace Park [ ironfurnace.midatlantic.cc ], George's Creek Days, Sunday in the Park, and the annual Iron Furnace 5K run (and 1.5 mile Fun Run). The Council composed and published the Lonaconing Town Book, Lonaconing - Home in the Hills, purchased the Maryland and United States flags for Main Street, and the international flags for the Iron Furnace Park. They organized the fundraiser to purchase the Nativity display at the furnace, purchased Christmas garlands, assisted with memorial services, preservation of the Silk Mill, and the stabilization and display of the Lefty Grove Most Valuable Player trophy in the library History Room. The mission statement of the George's Creek Promotion Council is to instigate, support, and work for projects and activities which the members feel will make the George's Creek Valley a nicer place in which to live or visit.

New members are welcome.
